Installation in public Space - to joinby VR Urbanwww.vrurban.org

.

.

Because of the increased commercial interest of paving public space with digital advertising screens the need for an accessible intervention device seemed obvious and necessary. The wish and habit to comment (tag) the surrounding world is also an ancient and still vivant phenomena we try to preserve. Our concept of SMSlingshot aims for claiming back urban space and and give the inhabitants a tool for occupying urban screens and public walls. People shall not only remain as a passive audience, they must obtain the privilege, and beside that, the right tools to create their own multimedia content in the streets. The more and more mushrooming media facades, LED supplied walls and huge projections are interesting and worthy technical innovations for the people, but in contrast to the old fashioned posters in the streets, it is nearly impossible to create own content for these facades or even hang up your digital video. So inhabitants of urban areas get reduced to consumers, accepting the new over-commercial facades. We argument that people need a proper tool to act in the same visual way as multinational brands do. ThereÂŽs a lot to be said in the streets, but the advertisings are that visually loud, so the common person will not be heard. We change this! The SMSlingshot is an autonom working device, equipped with an ultrahigh frequency radio, hacked arduino board, laser and batteries. Text messages can be typed on a phone-sized wooden keypad which is integrated in the also wooden slingshot. After the message is finished, the user can aim on a media facade and send/shoot the message straight to the targeted point. It will then appear as a colored splash with the message written within. The text message will also be real-time twittered - just in case.

MR-808 InstallationsPerformanceby Moritz Simon Geistwww.simon-geist.de

.

.

The music robot MR-808 is a mechanical replica of the drum machine TR-808. Eleven sounds of the “TR-808” were replaced by mechanical actuators and physical tone generators, placed in a 3.30m by 1.70m enclosure. The electronically determined sounds of the “TR-808” are transferred into the physical world. Thus, the origin of the sounds is highlighted to the audience in a way no conventional media of electronic music production (PC) is able to. Consequently, the installation sensualizes the vulnerability and the fallibility, which are inherent to technical systems nowadays, but are often obscured and incomprehensible for the user. The MR-808 can be programmed externally by the audience with buttons and controls. Furthermore, it is part of a 45-minute performance of experimental electro-pop band Empor.

After moving to Dresden in 2000 to study fine arts, his passion for synthesizers and drum machines got nurtured through visits of Dresden’s club-canalisation. He quickly made himself a name as a DJ, who is just doing his own thing and got popular for that reason. As a part of the Idealfun-crew he started hosting parties always in the twilight zone between legal and illegal. This led to “Robo Dance”, Dresden’s only and (also for some other reasons) best Electro club night featuring guests like DMX Krew, Luke Eargoogle or Imatran Voima. For his own music he’s inspired by cannibal movies, number theory and birds. Still, his music is not easy to pigeonhole. After all, he loves Synth Wave, Electro, Afro, Kraut, Kosmische, Disco, Italo, Miami Bass and other Proto stuff – a lot of machine music.

His recorded output through countless singles and remixes and 8 studio albums for labels such as ~scape, Wagon Repair, and his own BLKRTZ imprint, as well as his genre defining Radio ROthko DJ mix considered by many to be the essential primer on dub techno have met with consistent critical acclaim. Exploring the entire spectrum of electronic music from slowing evolving ambient and experimental excursions to dance floor rocking house and techno, Scott's music has also seen frequent use in film and new media projects, most notably in collaboration with renowned French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, and the award winning film Ultranova from Belgian director Bouli Lanners.Assimilation Process sounds electronic, digital, futuristic, massive, bumpy, spherical and dark at the same time. The new project by Stefan Senf (a.k.a. Noize Creator) absorbes all the different influences out of his twenty years of music production.

ELVI & DUNIAN send out messages of soul that vary from deep and profound bass woofers to acidic synth journeys through the cosmos, always telling a story, always keeping pace with both musicality and the primordial instinct of the dance.A collaboration between Riga based disc jockey and electronic music producer known as Elvi Soulsystems and the multi-talented musician turned producer, originally from Ogre, who's made himself a name as Dunian. Their sound - though still young - reflects both talents.Ko?ek van Buuren (Kodek) is perhaps a most progressive representative of the contemporary underground music scene in Latvia. Creating sounds in atypical genres, he operates with current actualities, usually surprising bystanders with his over-modern attitude to the accepted standards. With his shows, he usually challenges listeners to think outside what is seen as ‘normal’ by the conservative sweep of culture. He goes far beyond the conventional esthetic. http://4444.debilas.net

Vedana by Zavoloka and Laetitia Morais :Vedana is a unique piece of both artist's artwork. It is exploration of Water Element, ancient knowledge through experimental music and generative visuals. The music is composed by Zavoloka in real-time, transmitting different states of water and how they can be specifically translated to sound, as a interactive research. Low frequencies as a depth, secret, mystery, unknown. Ukrainian traditional vocal and voices as a water of life, flowing as canvas, clearness and deepness of sound. Deep changeable rhythms, warm harmonies. The visuals are composed by Laetitia Morais, exalting the water shapes, as the visuals react and transform themselves, depending to the frequencies captured from Zavoloka's music. The join of very technological systems with rude and natural materials (high and low tech) is an interest present on this project. If the space is open to it the visuals can be integrated into architectural forms, changing the perception of the structure.Laetitia Morais is a visual artist working on media and dialogues between physical and digital computing. Collaborating with a range of musicians, the main interest of those "collabs" is to transform sounds into a "memorial data" that can stimulate the senses to a specific idea, distorting the common sense of perspective and deep field. She is also actual professor of Art & Design and Comunication & Media Design at College of Education, Coimbra in Portugal.http://3leds.com

AV Screening / Theoryhttp://comatonse.com/writings/2012_soulnessless.html

.

.

Over 32 hrs. in length, Thaemlitz’ latest album "Soulnessless" investigates notions of "soul," "meditation," "spirituality" and "religiosity" as fundamental forms of mediation between consumers and audio marketplaces. It was composed from an openly non-spiritual and anti-religious perspective that sees atheism not as a "solution" or "alternative" to religious organizing, but as an act of self-defense entwined with the hopelessness of life amidst an unstoppable onslaught of spiritual dogmas and superstitions. As with all of Thaemlitz' electroacoustic performances, expectations around what constitutes a "live concert" are actively subverted. This performance focuses on audio and video from the first four Cantos totaling 80 min.: "Canto I: Rosary Novena for Gender Transitioning," "Canto II: Traffic With the Devil," "Canto III: Pink Sisters," and "Canto IV: Two Letters." Concludes with audience Q&A, moderation: Radost Stroynik.

The film was censored in one part of the state and the announcement that Radost would organize a private screening and premiere arose discussion on topics like censorship, artistic freedom, nationalism, war crimes etc. This act of individual freedom that Radost formally describes as a „media-hack action“ received significant media coverage in the local and international media and, as Radost likes to believe, gave a significant impulse for the awakening of the civil society in her country.Radost is the daughter of the Bogumil priests Mama Lajka and Tata Zavila, phantasy characters that use internet space to question today®s religious views of the Balkan peninsula by interacting with local social network users and blogging.

The centerpiece to Thaemlitz’ album “Soulnessless.” Today’s online distribution demands “digital exclusive” materials that exceed the CD album, while royalties are recouped in ever-smaller fractions as projects are fragmented through single-track MP3 downloads. While MP3’s are almost exclusively used for quick downloads, their revolutionary long-play possibilities go unexplored. Between June 6-16, 2008, Thaemlitz set out to record the “world’s first full-length MP3 album” at York University's Sir Jack Lyons Music Research Centre, England. The resulting MP3 file (<4GB, FAT32 compliant, approx. 30 hours at 320kB/s) features a piano solo recorded in sittings averaging 4 to 6 hours in length. The theme is “Meditation on Wage Labor and the Death of the Album.” The duration of this live performance is a minimum of 81 min., so as to preclude a recording from fitting onto a conventional audio CD.
