Veronica Vasicka
Veronica Vasicka was born in New York City to an Uruguayan mother and Czech father. At an early age, she had a passion for music and photography. She received her first Casio SK-1 ‘toy’ synthesizer for Christmas at the age of 11 and was exposed to New Wave music cassettes via her old brother. At 13, she began shooting black and white images of her friends in NYC. One example of a stunning image she shot at the age of 16, her best friend’s face in profile, can be seen on the cover a 2006 release entitled, V/A – The Lost Tapes LP : A Compilation of European Minimal Wave ’81-’86. At 18 she went on to study photography and four years later received her degree at the Rhode Island School of Design. She came back to NYC, and worked as a photographer for several years. Frustrated by the commercial aspects of the field, she ended up taking a deeper interest in music. In 2003, she co-founded NYC’s largest online radio station, East Village Radio. Inspired by the music she gathered for her weekly two hour radio show, she launched the Minimal Wave label in 2005. Specializing in obscure electronic gems, she loves old New Wave, Italo Disco and House music. She aims to bring rare recordings to the public via Minimal Wave, as well as her sub-label Cititrax, which features newer bands and classic house reissues. She continues to host the weekly radio show on East Village Radio (Sundays 6:00-8:00PM EST), and also DJs weekly at parties and in various clubs around New York City. She records her own music under the name 2VM, a New Wave collaboration with the Minus Records artist Marc Houle. In 2010, she compiled “The Minimal Wave Tapes: Volume One”, released on Peanut Butter Wolf’s Stones Throw Records.
The Minimal Wave label specializes in creating vinyl editions of late 70s to early 80s synth wave music. Most of the time, the albums have never been released on vinyl before. The source material is varied between old cassettes, cassette compilations and reel-to-reel tapes. These high quality editions are hand-numbered and feature lovely artwork and printed inserts with graphics and information about the bands.
Her DJ sets range from Minimal Electro to dark Italo Disco and House mixed in with classic New Wave. She likes to tell a story when spinning and to teach the crowd about the roots of electronic music. She has a fantastic talent for synthesizing her influences into an unforgettable night of dancing.
Recently, she DJ’d at both MoMA and MoMA PS1 for Summer Warm Up, the Seven NY party at Tribeca Grand, and Surface To Air Party at OAK NYC.
