»PICIDAE« CHRISTOPH WACHTER & MATHIAS JUD

2007 -- http://pici.picidae.net // http://picidae.net | CYNETart-Förderpreis der Kunstministerin des Freistaates Sachsen | Supported by Migros Kulturprozent, Werkleitz Gesellschaft

picinet_2.jpgSurfing the Internet and the world shrinks to the size of a village. The farthest regions are just one click away. But taking a closer look, the infinite freedom of a virtual space is just an illusion. The World Wide Web, the nervous system of a simultaneous communication and the platform for global data exchange, is quite a diverse heterogeneous formation. Many nations have an active Internet censorship.

Against corpse trafficking on the net
The movement-for-account-corpses.de is sticking up for neglected user accounts

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Fishii/166/153/26

Everybody knows it: online communities consist of account corpses. They are the sad remains of the data of users who logged out long ago. Publicly they are proudly recorded as official members but internally they are totally ignored. The worst is happening in Second Life: previously, in their lifetime, created lovingly, the account corpses now are denied all visibility. Only those who are socially successful, still in contact with a real life human, are smooching about in Second Life and don't even consider that they are drifting through an army of invisible, miserable ghosts. Mutely sighing, the account corpses whisper to each other: they are only keeping us to sell us for a lot of money one day - account corpse trafficking! Is any online community free of this? Facebook, eBay, Xing, David Hasselhoff Fanclub, MySpace, Yahoo, Modern Grandparents, Flickr - they all want to make a fast buck on the backs of those who passed away.

By general request of the account corpse scene we, the movement-for-account-corpses.de, are now pitting ourselves against the corpse traders. We are now beginning to force the metaverse "Second Life", as the most despicable example of this kind of trading, to its knees.

We have placed a poster in a building pit teleporting you up to the movement's main office. Once there - with barely any difficulties - you will locate three flying websites connecting you to:

* an account corpses t-shirt shop where anyone can buy real account corpses t-shirts in order to raise the awareness of the public
* a petition to Linden Lab to reanimate the visibility of logged-out users
* the telekinetic web log of the avatar Muji Zapedzki, the official founder of the movement-for-account-corpses.de. This is where Muji mostly broods over her critical relationship with her account owner, the "so-called artist" Susanne Berkenheger. Muji is terrified by the thought - and not without reasons - that one day she'll also end up as an account corpse.

Of course, you can find all links here as well: www.movement-for-account-corpses.de

»DOUBLE HELIX« URSULA DAMM

2006 -- http://www.ursuladamm.de | Recognition
Programming: Christian Kessler; Sound: Yunchul Kim

»Double helix swing« is an installation for midges and humans. This installation uses a device to attract swarms of midges. At the same time these insects are filmed. These cut scenes are the basis of a virtual world that investigates the trajectories of chironomids. Thus the installation enters into the imagery of nature and contrasts it with established scientific methods.

»COMPOSITION« ANDRES RAMIREZ GAVIRIA

2006 -- http://www.andresramirezgaviria.com | Generative audio-visual installation

»Composition« is a generative audio-visual installation that appropriates and deconstructs the »Transatlantic Paintings« of Piet Mondrian in order to form a critical comment on the phenomenon of abstraction as developed in the history of modern art, as well as in its relation to contemporary digital culture.

»4^15 - STUDIES IN PERCEPTION« PAUL BROWN

2006 -- http://www.paul-brown.com | Kinetic painting, size variable, Made with Processing

In »4^15« the movement and colour changes are random. The work explores human cognition: the way that the visual cortex and brain find salience in ›well dressed noise‹.

»PROZESS 001 | 006« KAY MALEK

2008 | Digital Reality

»PROCESS 001 | 006« is a definition of its own form of reality, which follows own regularities and is no virtual simulation. In the memory of a computer existing it is the sum of a multitude of digital processes, which interact independently with one another, and stands as realtime process in the same time context as the viewer.

»DRISHTI II« JEN-KUANG CHANG

2007 | Recognition | Visual Music Clip, duration: 4 min 30 sec

»Drishti II«, a term describing the visions one experiences during meditative states, is the second installment in the series realized in 2007. Both sampled and computer-generated sounds are incorporated in order to achieve the intended variety of sonic landscapes to match the vivid, but delicate visualization. By presenting this composition, the composer invites listener to actively contemplate one's Self and the interaction between Self and the immediate surroundings that might be fallacious and misleading to one's true understanding of inner divinity.

»LE GRAND CONTENT« CLEMENS KOGLER

2007 -- http://www.clemenskogler.net | short film, Beta SP, 4:3, colour, stereo, duration: 3 min 57 sec

Le Grand Content examines the omnipresent Powerpoint-culture in search for its philosophical potential. Intersections and diagrams are assembled to form a grand 'association-chain-massacre'. which challenges itself to answer all questions of the universe and some more. Of course, it totally fails this assignment, but in its failure it still manages to produce some magical nuance and shades between the great topics death, cable tv, emotions and hamsters.

»WORLD STATE« GREGORY CHATONSKY

2008 -- http://incident.net/works/worldstate | Actionscript 3.0, RSS, H.264, MP3 | The young woman: Mireille Hébert, Production: Year01 (Toronto), Vidéographe (Montreal)

A young woman is in her room. She seems sick. Sometimes she looks better. Sometimes she seems really sick. The different ways in which she behaves seem to respond to a secret course. As the day goes by she starts having trouble breathing, she calms down and then stands up and collapses. Everything starts all over again. Somewhere else people are dying or hurt, governments are overthrown or voted off, some raw materials become scarce, negotiations are in the progress, treaties are signed. Everything starts all over again.

»ABOUT THE LIFE AND DEATH OF NEUTRON STARS AND TELEVISION SETS « HEIKE KALTENBRUNNER

2005 -- http://umdreh.ung.at
A cooperation between Heike Kaltenbrunner and the Media arts laboratory/ Franz Xaver
Installation for crt televisions and speakers

Loops of pulsar-signals, as well as the live stream of the radio telescope RT03 are assigned to a multiple speaker scenario. Fed to manipulated tube monitors the signals are interpreted as horizontal and vertical lines.
The sounds of the "dead" stars thus generate pictures and slowly destroy the cathode tubes and burn the screens - until they end with a last flash.

»AUTOWOW AND AUTOLINO« MARC BÖHLEN

2007 -- http://www.realtechsupport.org | Voyeurism Game | Concept, design, algorithm, programming: Marc Böhlen
Teleskope-Motion-Algorithmus in Konsultation mit AILAB Zürich

The dual Autowow and Autolino are automated voyeurism games. They automate little nighttime indulgences for which the modern urbanite has little time but much desire. Autolino and Autowow seem to partake in the tradition of useless machines. However, they offer a real service by automating obsessions that are out of reach of the busy and tired modern urbanite. Autowow and Autolino give everyman the luxury of extended and repeated nighttime city sky voyeurism.
Autowow and Autolino cover the natural and artificial events in the night sky and bring them home to your computer screen. Watch for »Autowow and Autolino«-CYNETart_08-Homepage:

CYNETart - performance lecture

16th Nov. | 4pm
»TOOLS TO SEARCH« AGNES MEYER-BRANDIS

2008 -- http://www.ffur.de | performance lecture, duration: 45 min

Tools to Search - An insight into the search movements and background of the Research Raft

The lecture presents a dive through the depth layers of the work of Agnes Meyer-Brandis, respectively the research raft ´ ffUR, which is engaged in exploring subterranean and hidden worlds.
The description and explanation of the scientific basis of the artistic work often ends in unbelievable, but nevertheless existing elements and stories.
These to some extent seemingly absurd, but real aspects of our world are opposed to the operable equipment and the research activity of the poetically oriented ffUR.
