SHAPE November showcases and other news

November sees the member festivals of SHAPE, the Creative Europe supported platform for innovative music and audiovisual art, organizing the final showcases with SHAPE artists of 2016. The 2016 editions of CYNETART and Schiev are coming, and so are one-offs by Berlin’s CTM festival and Prague’s art center MeetFactory. Read more about these events and new mixes in our monthly news update.

On November 4, SHAPE member festival CTM and legendary hardware/software company Ableton will collaborate on yet another event: DJs and live acts will take over diverse spaces within the venue (Volksbühne theater), inviting you to move around across styles and genres in a programme as varied as Ableton’s Loop summit. As part of this event, the French-Japanese light installation/rhythmic music duo Nonotak will appear in Berlin for the first time, with their dazzling fusion of electronic music, strobe-lit shadow-strewn lighting design and multiple screens built into structures that surround the artists, while Interdisciplinary artist Nik Nowak will appear with beat producer Spa¨nk and video artist Moritz Stumm as Schockglatze. The Norwegian Coméme family member Charlotte Bendiks fuses classic house, disco, African groove and Latin-inspired beats in the foyer upstairs.

Impressively, SHAPE member festival CYNETART will celebrate its 20th anniversary from November 10 until November 16. Mexican-born installation artist and musician Laura Luna from Prague will present a special visual collaboration with Pascal Silondi, while audiovisual artist Nicolas Maigret will be featured with his performance “The Private Cinema” and Norwegian experimental vocalist Stine Janvin Motland will present her project “Fake Synthetic Music”. Clock DVA member Maurizio Martinucci aka TeZ will present “PV868” - experimental creation and performance aimed at producing an audiovisual feed/stimulus which would allow a peculiar effect of moving visual patterns to emerge directly in the brain of the viewer/listener. Polish artist and theorist Marta Heberle will give a solo performance as well as participate in a public interview. Also, the open workshop by Frank Bretschneider might turn out to be the highlight of CYNETART’s SHAPE educational programme.

Meanwhile, Brussels’ based music festival Schiev – SHAPE’s youngest member organization – will have its second edition on November 11 - 13, featuring 8 SHAPE artists of 2016 – Editions Mego’s sound sculptress Klara Lewis, Peder Mannerfelt, whose album “Controlling Body” has already been named as one of the best albums of the year by FACT Magazine, Portugese experimental house producer IVVVO, Janus affiliate KABLAM, WARP Records’ Jackson, experimental guitarist Thomas Bonvalet a.k.a. L’Ocelle Mare, French techno producer Voiski and proto-manele deconstructionists Raze de Soare – as well as Yves De Mey as an alumnus of SHAPE 2015.

On November 24, MeetFactory – one of two coordinating organizations of SHAPE – will host its final SHAPE showcase of 2016, featuring Peder Mannerfelt and Portuguese interdisciplinary artist Gil Delindro, whose work focuses on the conflicting relation between ego, nature and technology.
Also, don’t miss Venezuelan DJ Hyperaktivist playing at club Aurora in Hungary at an event organized by UH Fest on 18 November, as well as post-grime producer and DJ KABLAM playing at Dresden’s Festspielhaus Hellerau on November 19.

SHAPE will start its year 3 activities in December, when a large showcase will be presented at the Novas FrequĂŞncias festival in Rio de Janeiro.

SHAPE at Novas FrequĂŞncias and October showcases

October proves to be one of the busiest months for SHAPE and its artists and festivals, with no less than 8 festivals across Europe presenting dozens of SHAPE artists. musikprotokoll (29 Sept – 9 Oct, Graz), UH Fest (2 – 9 Oct, Budapest), RIAM (7 – 29 Oct, Marseille), Maintenant (7 – 16 Oct, Rennes), Skanu Mezs (13 – 16 Oct + 12 Nov, Riga), Unsound (16 – 23 Oct, Krakow), DAVE & Cynetart (14 – 23 Oct, Dresden), Insomnia (27 – 29 Oct, Tromso). Please visit shapeplatform.eu for detailed information about individual events and lineups.

SHAPE platform is also proud to announce a showcase at Novas Frequências festival in Rio de Janeiro this December, our second large showcase beyond Europe (after this year's MUTEK presentation). And, as the line-up features no less than 13 SHAPE acts, the word “large” is indeed appropriate.

The showcase will offer an early glimpse into the 2017 artist list of SHAPE, as 11 of the 13 acts are from our next year’s roster.

Novas Frequências is the main regular festival of advanced and exploratory music in South America, and its sixth edition will take place between December 3rd and December 8th. As previously with MUTEK, the festival will become a meeting place for all 16 founding festivals of the SHAPE platform: the organization will have one of its two annual meetings in Rio, therefore the curators and artistic directors from all SHAPE festivals will be in the city, looking for interchange, cooperation and new collaborations with the local scene.
Meanwhile, the showcase itself will demonstrate the diverse artistic influences and interests, merging within SHAPE – artists within its line-up have been nominated to platform by 12 different member festivals, each with their own take on the future of adventurous music and audiovisual art.

The showcase will feature: Vienna-based composer, performer and sound artist Andreas Trobollowitsch (AT); Black Zone Myth Chant (FR), a project of Afro-centric psychedelia and hypnotic footwork by psych-drone artist High Wolf; two projects by Budapest-based musician Gábor Kovács (HU) – the noisy, experimental punk duo of Céh and the more rhythm-oriented, but no less confronting solo project Új Bála; J.G. Biberkopf (LT), whose “audio theater” works are impressive collages that draw on a wide range of influences, including grime and musique concrète; experimental guitarist and composer Julien Desprez (FR), who will present his improvisational performance/light installation Acapulco Redux; Mr. Mitch (UK), one of the key names in the burgeoning instrumental grime movement; artist Mike Rijnierse (NL), who specializes in site-specific installations, and who will present his new work Relief; Sis_Mic (FR), the latest project by electro-acoustic music composer and installation artist Pôm Bouvier B.; Lancaster-based virtuoso pianist and free improviser Stephen Grew (UK); Toxe (SE), a central figure within Staycore – a new ground-breaking label from Stockholm.

In addition to the aforementioned 11 artists from the 2017 list of SHAPE acts, the line-up of the showcase will also feature two alumni of SHAPE 2016: multidisciplinary artist Gil Delindro (PT), who will participate with multimedia performance Voidness of Touch, and experimental vocalist Stine Janvin Motland (NO) who will present her project Fake Synthetic Music.

More details about the showcase will be revealed soon. Meanwhile, You can find out more about the upcoming edition of Novas Frequências on the festival’s Facebook page.
